We all know how exhausting it is to carry a baby around for even a short period of time. It’s common for a baby to protest being placed on the bed, especially when he’s crying or fussy. Tips Flying with Strollers
What can families on the road do to avoid a mishap like the one that befell this unfortunate mom? I always strive to turn air travel horror stories into lessons that perhaps educate other families and prevent them from repeating the same nightmare story again and again.
1. Always Research Airline Specific Rules
In no way am I blaming the victim, but this incident serves as an essential reminder for parents to thoroughly investigate policies regarding child travel on any airline they fly. When it comes to concerns that are important to families flying together, the laws do vary from airline to airline. Even if the child is clearly under the age of 2, Southwest wants a birth certificate for each lap infant. What about one more example? Pre-boarding with small children is permitted on some airlines but not on others (or have different age cutoffs for pre-boarding). Prevent unpleasant surprises on the day of departure by doing your homework in advance, especially if you don’t travel often.
2. Don’t Fly American if You Need a Large Stroller
If you need a double stroller or a larger stroller for your trip, I’d suggest taking a flight on a different airline if possible. Only strollers weighing less than 20 pounds can be gate checked on American Airlines. For the most part, travelers don’t have to worry about this, unless they happen to come from a family that happens to live near an elite American Airlines hub. The best way to make a difference may be to vote with our wallets.
3. Bring a Smaller Stroller
Consider bringing a small stroller with you on American flights if possible. The gb Pockit ($189 on Amazon) is my favorite travel stroller and the only one we fly with these days. When it comes to taking it on the plane, it’s also compact enough to fit beneath the seat in front of you or in an overhead compartment (see my full gb Pockit review). Checking in at the gate is really painless.
Some families in the United States may be able to use lightweight double strollers that weigh less than 20 pounds. In the absence of a baby too young to use an umbrella-style stroller, these may be an option for parents of older children.
- Jeep Scout Double Stroller ($87, 18.3 lbs)
- Side-by-side stroller for city streets by Delta Children ($59; 18.3-pounds)
4. Bring a Baby Carrier
When flying with a baby or toddler, always pack a small, lightweight baby carrier. In the event of a crisis, it could come in helpful. The Bitybean, which is roughly the size of a water bottle, is my go-to tool. When my car seat roller cart broke on my solo Panama trip with both kids, it came to my rescue. Having it freed up my hands to push the broken car seat cart while also allowing me to carry my child. If your stroller is stolen or destroyed (which can happen! ), a carrier will come in handy. It can also be used to carry a baby while using a single umbrella stroller for your older child or toddler.
How do you deep clean a stroller?
When it comes to deep cleaning a stroller, the method you use will depend on how frequently you use it.
Strollers, such as those used to transport an infant in a car seat or carrier, should be cleaned every two weeks, much like our bedding, if they are subjected to high use and are frequently transported to various locations and times during the day. However, if you only use your stroller once in a while, these tips will help maintain everything clean and germ-free:
In the first step, use warm water and soap to wash the straps and canopy separately. Wait, what’s that? Because dirt seeps into even the smallest cracks and crevices, thorough scrubbing is essential. Finally, use cold water to thoroughly rinse everything out before laying it out to dry.
Use an alcohol wipe to clean the handles of any food that may have been spilt on them (or even just some rubbing alcohol).
These regions can get particularly dirty because of how much bodily fluid is sitting there. So use a moist cloth to clean these areas, including the seat/area under your child’s bottom and between where they sit while laying flat in the stroller.
Moist the outside of your stroller with a wet cloth to remove any food residue that may have accumulated there.
After thoroughly washing everything, remove any cloth from the frame and drape it over shrubs or hanging ropes to ensure that they receive a light coat of bleach or hydrogen peroxide.
Rather than drying it on a rack in your laundry room, rinse and hang the fabric upside down to dry. This will help it last much longer.
What kind of chemicals can I use on my baby’s stroller blanket?
Using a tiny amount of any chemical cleaner on a baby stroller blanket should be safe. Dishwasher liquid is preferred by some due to its intense degreasing properties, whereas bleach is more commonly used due to its rapid germ-killing properties.
Soap and water can also be used to clean baby stroller blankets because they don’t leave behind a harsh residue or fragrance.
Keep in mind that no matter what method you use to clean your blanket, you should never use more than the amount of cleaner that is necessary to completely cover the fabric. Instead of spraying a cleaner on, use a cloth wipe to remove debris from deep within the fibers. Be careful not to harm the fabric by rubbing too hard.
Rinse the blanket well after cleaning with chemicals to avoid exposing the fabric to any harsh chemicals that will continue to do damage to it.
Cleaning with only water: If you want to clean your baby’s stroller blanket without damaging it further, use warm soapy water or baking soda and vinegar (or lemon juice) mixed in equal parts for an eco-friendly option.
Mildew growth can occur if your strollers don’t have enough ventilation, which not only smells bad but also makes it more difficult for germs hidden deep inside its fibers to be eliminated, resulting in the eventual decay of the surfaces on which they rest.
Tips for Cleaning and Sanitizing a Stroller Blanket
Every day, switch out the blanket. If you’re using a disposable one, this is very critical. As a result, any germs that have accumulated in your stroller will be unable to remain there for an extended period of time.
Use a mild soap and warm water to wash it after each use to keep it clean and free of bacteria.
It’s better than just soap and water to disinfect using hydrogen peroxide (in little amounts! ), vinegar, or bleach as necessary. The health of your child is directly related to how well you maintain a clean environment for them.
The next morning, you’ll be able to run errands more quickly if you’ve already washed one of them at home tonight.
You’ll never be without a clean one if you carry a few of them in your baby bag!
Taking care of a newborn while out in public can be particularly challenging for parents of young children. Finding the greatest baby strollers will make your life a lot simpler. Using this will help you and your baby have a great day outdoors. Those who have many children, such as twins or triplets, may also find it useful. Buying the best stroller for your child is the best way to have fun as a parent, and we hope that you’ll do just that.
