Registrations for International Teuila Tag Tournament in Samoa

Team registrations for Samoa Tag Incorporated’s inaugural Teuila Tag Tournament at Apia Park Stadium in September are open until June 30.

Samoa Tag Incorporated was officially endorsed by the Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (SASNOC) in 2017, as the National Samoa Sports Body for Tag, with a goal of establishing tag as one of the predominant sports in Samoa, through tournaments, modules and skills sessions in schools.

Patron of honour for Samoa Tag Incorporated Hon. Loau Keneti Sio, Minister of Sports, Education & Culture says by promoting the sport and encouraging players of all ages, they hope to promote a healthy and fun environment where players can learn new skills whilst getting some exercise and leading to a healthier lifestyle.

The inaugural Teuila Tag Tournament will be held on the Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th of September, at Apia Park Stadium, and will see teams participating from Samoa, NZ and Australia in four categories Open Womens, Open Mens, Open Mixed and Golden Oldies Mens (40+).

To fully establish the sport under its new sanction from SASNOC Samoa Tag Inc warmly invite international competition to play against the local talent in the hopes of turning the tournament into an annual event.

Sports events and tournaments have a huge impact socio-economic impact in Samoa and around the Pacific. And the Samoa Tag Committee hopes to utilise Tag to bring more of these opportunities to Samoa.

Tag Tournaments have been held in NZ and Australia for many years and have been extremely popular and successful, however these usually involve non-sanctioned Island nations participating. By establishing Samoa’s own international tournament, they hope to pave the way for other sanctioned Island nations to participate.

Samoa Tag Incorporated aim to establish a National team with talent sourced from Samoa as well as from those of Samoan ethnicity living overseas.

The tournament has been sponsored by Samoa Airways with airfare deals for players travelling to Samoa in September, Taula Beer and Samoa Commercial Bank, regular sponsors for local tournaments, and Samoa Tourism Authority who are assisting with arranging accommodation deals.

In preparation, three local tournaments have been organised for local teams, leading up to the international event in September. Interest in the tournaments is increasing each time with around 20 teams participating at the latest one held in May, at Marist Sports Grounds.

NZ and Australia will also be organising local tournaments under the umbrella of Samoa Tag Incorporated in 2018.
