Pacific Media Programme applications closing soon

Journalism students from across the Pacific are encouraged to apply for the Pacific Cooperation Foundation’s media programme which enters its fourth year in 2018. Chosen students will gain opportunities to intern with regional news and media organisations in the Pacific region, applications deadline has been extended to Thursday May 24.

The PCF Media Programme focuses on improving the level and quality of media exposure in the Pacific, with particular interest on economic development, arts and culture.

Selected students will be immersed in the newsroom for two weeks where they will meet reporters and come away with a better understanding of regional issues.

Past students who have participated in the programme have been hosted by Pacific Media Network, Māori Television, Pacific Media Centre and Tiki Lounge Productions where they have experienced the reality of working as a journalist and a sense of appreciation for the media industry.

In the past years, many of the interns have found employment in the media industry, a key aim of the initiative.

2017 saw five interns chosen for the Media Programme and saw two final year tertiary students from New Zealand travelling to the Pacific for the two-week internship, and three Pacific-based students journeying to NZ for an intense two weeks spent at various media organisations in Auckland.

South Auckland born and raised 2017 PCF media intern Brandon Ulfsby was sent to Samoa where he learned about the local industry.

He says his internship strengthened his interest in the Pacific.

“My trip to Samoa was an amazing experience - this trip was a media exchange but for me as a New Zealander going to the Pacific, it was very much more of a cultural experience.

“For New Zealanders going to the Pacific, it's a cultural experience that gives a greater perspective to the Pacific that is needed here.”

Students who wish to participate in this year’s programme must provide a CV and cover letter summarising their media experience/interest and any other relevant work they wish to include to support their application.

The deadline for applications is now Thursday 24 May.
