Altogether 11 artists and groups have been announced as finalists at a Civic Reception at Manukau City, on Thursday, 1 May, hosted by Manukau City Mayor Len Brown.

Built on a strong choral tradition, Tongan reggae group 3 Houses Down is a finalist for its debut album ‘Dreadtown’ in the S3 Best Pacific Music Album and the Radio 531pi Best Pacific Group categories. The album track ‘Dandyman’ is a finalist for the APRA Best Pacific Song Award.

Cydel’s unique sound fused from RnB, Blues, Reggae and Polynesian mixed with striking soulful harmonies have earned the south Auckland duo three finals berths. The album ‘Soul Finder’ is up for the Niu FM Best Pacific Urban Artist, the Radio 531pi Best Pacific Group and the Tui Award for S3 Best Pacific Music Album.

Popular Tokelauan/Samoan based musician Vaniah ToloaAfter an absence of two years, Scribe makes a welcome return to the awards finals with three slots too. Named for his trusty rhyme book, the album of the same name secures Scribe finals spots in NZ Music Commission Best Pacific Male Artist and Niu FM Best Pacific Urban Artist. The ‘Rhyme Book’ single ‘Say It Again’ is up for the APRA Best Pacific Song Award.

The only other finalist with more than one slot is Te Vaka which is up for Radio 531PI Best Pacific Group and S3 Best Pacific Music Album awards for the group’s fifth album ‘Olatia’.

The awards are in their fourth year and winners are to be announced at an event celebrating and honouring Pacific music and artists at Manukau City’s TelstraClear Pacific venue on May 31.

A new People’s Choice Award has also been introduced to the line-up for the Best Pacific Artist. All category finalists are eligible for this award with the public able to cast their vote by logging onto www.pacificmusicawards.org.nz

“The S³ Pacific Music Awards 2008 finalist list is a mix of previous winners and finalists with fresh new entrants covering a variety of music from new reggae sounds and traditional Pacific language music to Pasifika hip hop,” says Pacific Music Awards Trust spokesperson Rev. Mua Strickson-Pua.

I am totally going for Cydel!! A positive duo who have been in the music scene for years but need more credit from n.z for their hard work.Im sure that the purpose of the Awards is to celebrate pacific talent throughout our community & Cydel are defintely part of that milestone.Their lyrics and lifestyle are not always shown on c.4 or mtv like other pacific artists but if you ask anyone from South Auckland if they know Cydel,i know you will get positive feedback. Its all about influence through positive music for our people & Cydel are the full package.GO CYDEL!!!!

It looks like Scribe's year so expect him to clean up - but only because he's featured in the charts and always done well in Oz. But I think PNC deserves the artist award, he got snubbed last year and then went on to win the hip hop award at the NZ Music awards, what's up with that? makes the pacific music awards look like we dont know our own talent and it takes the mainstream to point that out to us? ahh durr..

I hope Vaniah gets his dues this year. He the man, e le galo oe, what an anthem - it will be a Samoan classic up there with the 5 stars in the future....malo tama samoa & tokelau

I can't believe Zero T wasn't even nominated for best pacific group!!! they are representing Cook Islands hard and had two singles in the NZ top 20 music charts, more than I can say about the three finalists in that category? Scribe is a shoot in for best Pacific artist but I think if you went to the community grass roots of Pacific peoples in NZ, they will tell you Vaniah is way more popular than Scribe, his songs Tukua and E le galo oe have broken into mainstream radio and for a Samoan-Tokelauan based in Apia to do that - that's saying something so give him his props yawl! Time to engage with the real island community people - not the big wigs in the clouds...
