The tradition of wedding anniversary gifts is thought to have originated in medieval Germany where, if a married couple lived to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their wedding, the wife was presented with a silver wreath
by her husband. On their 50th anniversary she received a wreath of gold. Over time the number of symbols expanded and gifts had direct connections with each stage of married life. These days anniversary gifts don’t have to be taken literally, for example, it’s a bit of a stretch to afford a ruby, sapphire, or diamond, so get creative. Give your spouse a ruby coloured blanket or a diamante bracelet. Remember, it’s still the thought that counts!
