“Willie said if he ever got married, he wanted it to be with someone who has small feet. So she could be closer to the kitchen sink.”
That was how the Best Man’s speech started. Sadly for Willie, my feet are a size 10!
On Wednesday December 14, 2011, on our eighth anniversary being together, I married my soul mate.
Throughout my life I never had an interest in getting married. Conforming to what society viewed as “right” was not my thing. And I never saw marriage as being anything more than a piece of paper. My heart was still in the relationship for the long-run. I was quite happy to live out the rest of my days with my man, unwed, but still very happy and very much in love.
Until, of course, he proposed. And the only word that could come out of my mouth was, Yes.
In Issue 47 (Nov/Dec) I announced my pending wedding to the SPASIFIK family of readers. And I’m now happy to announce, we did it!
Of all the gorgeous summer weather promised, we were married on the week the rain decided to hit New Zealand. For our special day, the forecast promised a thunder storm.
But with all eyes to the heavens, we said our I Dos outdoors as planned under the most spectacular grove of trees. And the skies stayed dry.
Our day was perfect.
I write to you as a marriage convert. I absolutely love being married. We are still flying high on happiness. And while it hasn’t really changed us or our relationship, sharing the same name (well, almost, I’ll be hyphenating it with my grandfather’s surname) brings you just that little bit closer and strengthens the bond already there.
To keep with cultural tradition, we also celebrated our First Sunday at his family’s Tongan church over the weekend, blending two cultures and two families.
To top off the month my Nana celebrates her 54th wedding anniversary to my late papa, Jumby, and, of course, we are celebrating Christmas and New Year with friends and family.
On behalf of the SPASIFIK Family I would like to wish you all a safe and happy holiday and may you all have as much joy and happiness as we have this season.
To keep you informed and entertained during your break, SPASIFIK Issue 48 (Jan/Feb 2012) goes on sale December 29 and is jam-packed full of fun and entertaining reads for the whole family. We go on set with the cast of Sione’s 2: Back in Business, and there’s a 27-page Healthy Living Guide to help you with your health goals for 2012. Plus much more!
