It wasn’t a perfect game, but it was still a thrashing.

The Black Ferns opened their world cup campaign with a splash taking the victory with a 32-point lead over Wales.

Captain Fiao’o Fa’amausili in her post match interview was rather chuffed overall but mentioned the team’s lukewarm start.

“Overall I’m pretty pleased, but we had a slow start.

“Coming into Ireland we had high expectations of ourselves but we started pretty slow,” she said before giving Wales full credit for their first 20 minutes, “they really gave it to us in the first 20 minutes.”

However the Black Ferns pushed through the entire game with fullback Selica Winiata bagging a hat trick and winger Renee Wickliffe scoring two tries.

Winger Portia Woodman and centre Stacey also scored tries, along with lock Eloise Blackwell.

Their next pool match is on Sunday (NZT) against Hong Kong followed by the more formidable Canada.

With a four-day turnaround for each match the girls will focus on recovery in the next two days before training and being ready for the next pool match.

Despite Hong Kong’s whopping 98-0 loss to Canada, prompting punters to expect a straightforward win from the Black Ferns Winiata in an interview reckons there’s no looking too far ahead in case of an upset, and trusts their coaches won’t take Hong Kong lightly.
