Fono to discuss Family Violence in Pacific Families

Pasefika Proud, a campaign addressing violence in Pacific families by using clear, consistent messaging around building strong families, is one of the key supporters of The Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu: Pathways to Wellbeing Fono on 22 February 2019, a FREE Fono for those who want to contribute to the discussion of family violence as it relates to Pacific communities, families, women and children.

Research shows that violence was not a part of our Pacific cultures, so it should not be a part of our present nor our future. A loss of our culture (understanding and practices) has led to a breakdown in relational being and an escalation in unacceptable violent behaviour.

The Nga Vaka o Kāiga Tapu: Pathways to Wellbeing Fono is a free Fono for those who want to contribute to the discussion of Family Violence as it relates to Pacific communities, families, women and children which will take place on Friday 22nd February 2019 at the Waipuna Hotel, 58 Waipuna Road, Mt Wellington.

The one-day event features international keynote speakers, including Samoa’s Ombudsman, Maiava Iulai Toma and academic and former politician, Dr Ana Taufe’ulungaki from Tonga, alongside policy influencers, including Rev Dr. Charles Waldegrave and Taimalie-utu Kiwi Tamasese from the Family Centre Social Policy and Salu Uepa from the, Research Unit and who will share her experiences with family violence.

The programme also includes, the New Zealand Government Minister of Social Development, the Hon. Carmel Sepuloni, and Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Justice (Sexual and Domestic Violence Issues) Jan Logie, who is responsible for joint agency work in family violence.
