I Love Samoa - Measles Benefit Concert

The Pacific music community have come together to raise funds to support the families that have lost loved ones to the measles epidemic in Samoa which claimed 83 lives- most of which were children and babies. The first I Love Samoa concert will feature Fiji and will take place at the Vodafone Event Centre on Tuesday 28 January.

The 'I Love Samoa 2020' concerts will take place in Auckland, Wellington and Australia's Gold Coast from the end of the month- featuring a solid lineup of Pasifika artists donating their time and talents for the cause.

The concerts will include Fiji, Ardijah, Annie Crummer, Savage, Adeaze,  Lole and Punialava'a. Line-ups might differ at each venue but more details could be found on the event Facebook pages.

As of 6 January 2020, there were 5,697 confirmed cases of measles and 83 deaths, out of a Samoan population of 200,874. Over two percent of the population has been infected since the outbreak started in late September 2019.

Seiuliali'i Dr. George Leao Tuitama, the psychiatric registrar and head of the Mental Health Unit in the Ministry of Health says those personally affected, by loss of a family member, or watching their loved one in the hospital, are probably close to breaking point with coping mechanisms working on overdrive.

Samoa’s Mental Health unit has warned of the growing psychological impact of the measles epidemic and is urging people to seek help. Seiulialii said the team was providing both emotional and spiritual support.

There will be an ‘I LOVE SAMOA 2020’ benefit concert in Wellington on the 29th of January, in the Gold Coast Australia on the 8th February as well as an “I LOVE SAMOA’ free event February 15th in Samoa.
